After we finished the second movie, we realized it was almost midnight. Malik walked me home like we'd been on a date... Fuck, that had been a date, hadn't it? Just because neither of us had called it that didn't mean it was anything else.

The hallway was quiet as I snuck through after hugging Malik goodbye at the door, and I made it to my room without anyone spotting me. Not that it would've been bad if I had been, but the last thing I needed right now was for Ashley to see me and tease me about my...my date.

Sliding into my bed, I pulled the sheets over myself before turning onto my side and curling into a ball. As I closed my eyes, my mind started going over everything that had happened today.

I didn't remember thinking this much when I was alive, but I guessed that explained why I'd decided to join Cynthia in her crazy plans. Maybe if I'd spent more time thinking and less time hunting, I wouldn't have lost what little sanity I'd had at that point.

Hell, who was I kidding? I'd lost myself a long time before I met Cynthia, maybe even on the day I'd been turned into a vampire.

I wondered what would've happened if that vampire hadn't found me, if I'd just died instead. I would've found Malik sooner, for once. The way he talked, I was sure he'd been here a century ago, and if I'd died human, I probably wouldn't have ended up in the center. I'd been a good person when I was human, content to live with what I had.

If I hadn't been turned, I would've been a worthy mate for Malik. But that wasn't what had happened. A vampire had found me moments before I expired and turned me into a monster.

Growling under my breath, I forced my mind away from the past. I couldn't change it, and there was no point in wishing I could.

I'd sworn to myself that I was going to try to be a worthy mate for Malik, and I was going to keep my promise. I couldn't alter what I'd done in the human realm, but I wasn't going to let it stop me from being good now. I was going to keep changing and become the best version of myself, and maybe then I'd be worthy of Malik.

Letting out a soft sigh, I forced everything out of my mind, determined to get some rest. While Otherworlders didn't really need sleep to manage, I liked doing it because it gave me a few hours of reprieve from my thoughts. I rarely dreamed, and when I did, it was usually nightmares about the things I'd done in the human realm, but they weren't frequent enough to make me hate sleeping.

As I drifted toward unconsciousness, I hoped I'd get to spend time with Malik again tomorrow.
